A key question of pragmatic research is why some learners decide to rescind the pragmatic norms of native speakers. Recent research has attempted to answer this question with various experimental tools, including DCTs MQs and RIs. Participants included 44 CLKs and 46 CNSs from five Korean Universities. Participants were required to complete the DCTs and MQs either in their L1 or L2. They were then invited to an RI where they were required to reflect and discuss their responses to each DCT situation.
The results showed that CLKs on average, did not adhere to the norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this despite the fact that they could create patterns that resembled native ones. They were aware of their practical resistance. They attributed their choices to learner-internal factors such as their personalities, multilingual identities, and ongoing lives. They also mentioned external factors like relational affordances. They described, for example how their interactions with their professors helped them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and social norms at their university.
The interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures and penalties they might face if their local social norms were not followed. They were concerned that their native interlocutors may view them as "foreignersand consider them ignorant. This concern was similar to the concerns voiced by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).
These findings suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are no longer the norm for Korean learners. They may still be useful for official Korean proficiency tests. But it would be prudent for future researchers to revisit their applicability in specific situations and in various cultural contexts. This will enable them to better understand how different cultural environments could affect the practical behavior of L2 students in the classroom and beyond.
